The Studio

Columbus Discount Recording's live room is a gargantuan 50ft x 30ft space, designed to be as versatile, sonically, as it is spacially accommodating. One end of the room is acoustically treated to be dead quiet with a flat frequency response, in order to meticulously capture the sound at the source. The rest of the space is open, and can be utilized to create anything from a subtle, natural reverb on the voice to big, booming, thunderous drums. One isolation booth is also available, but due to the sheer size of the room and modular nature of the sound-proofing, it is rarely needed.

The control room is large and comfortable, with ample seating, wi-fi, and a mini-fridge.

The studio is located in the bustling northern Olde Towne East district, and is easily within walking distance of several restaurants, bars, and bodegas.

The Gear

At CDR we prefer to work in the analog domain. In fact, Columbus Discount Recording is one of the few recording studios in Ohio where you can make a record completely in the analog domain. From mic to console to multi track tape machine to 1/4" mixdown deck, your program material never has to become ones and zeros.

Analog recording has several advantages over digital recording. The medium is time-tested, trusted, and has a permanance not found in digital recording. In ten years, the top o' the line file formats and machines we now use to record digitally will be obsolete; Today's ProTools HD files and hardware are tomorrow's ADATs. Tape machines will be mostly unchanged. They are, and will still be physical machines with moving parts that don't "crash" like a computer can. Most problems can be solved with a multimeter and a screwdriver. And, of course, analog recording just sounds better. It really does. Ask anybody who has recorded on both properly maintained analog gear and digital gear, and they will tell you the same.

To that end, our tape machines are not the typical pro-sumer model decks that sit in the corner, uncalibrated only to be used as pro-tools plug ins. Our high quality tape machines are at the heart of our studio. They are well maintained and and calibrated. Much of our other gear is either custom built or modified for better performance.
